Can I block someone and they don’t know?

If you’ve ever been bombarded with incessant messages on your phone or favorite social media app, or received even just one message from someone you’d rather not hear from, blocking the sender might seem like the obvious decision. But blocking works differently in different apps. Some apps prevent people you block from sending you messages altogether, which makes it clear to the sender that you’ve blocked them. That could be good if a person (or company) is filling your phone or messaging app inbox with spam, like sketchy links for cash rewards or refunds. More on Social Media Safety On other platforms, the sender might never know they’ve been blocked, though they may catch on when you never respond to their messages. This ambiguity might be an advantage with a casual acquaintance, like the person you met once at a potluck who keeps sending you news articles you’ve already seen. You’d rather not read them, but you want to avoid hurting the sender’s feelings. Whether you want to block someone in a stealthy way or an obvious one, you’ll need to know what happens on each platform or service. If you block someone, what does it look like to the sender? I spent a week blocking and unblocking my Consumer Reports colleagues, and asking them to block me, to better understand how the feature works on seven different platforms. I think they unblocked me after the testing, but for some apps I can’t be sure. Down below, we’ll look at each one. But first, here are two caveats. First, sometimes muting is better than blocking. This will stop you from getting notifications when the other person sends a message, and some apps will put their messages in a separate folder or tab in the app. But you’ll still be able to read their messages if you want to, so you can catch up on your sister’s food photos before giving her a phone call, even if you don’t want to see them every day. From a safety perspective, it may also be better to mute someone rather than blocking them if they’re sending harassing messages. That will give you evidence of the harassment in case things escalate, Secondly, you might need to turn off read receipts. That’s because if you have it enabled, the person you’ve blocked might quickly notice that you haven’t read any of their messages. That could tip them off. We’ll describe how to check or change this setting for each app. We’ve broken the apps we’re covering into two broad groups. Blocking Someone on Android Messages and Apple iMessage When you block a contact over Android or iPhone, they will still be able to send you text messages. These messages will not show up on your phone but the sender will see the messages as sent. They won’t know that they’ve been blocked. Blocking: In Messages, tap on the contact’s name in Contacts, tap More, then tap “Block contact.” In iMessage, tap on their name in Contacts, then tap on “Block this caller.” Read receipts: In Messages and iMessages, go to Settings > Message > Send Read Receipts or simply search for “receipts.” Turn that setting off if you don’t want the sender knowing when you’ve seen their messages. Alternatives to blocking: Instead of blocking, you can also hide alerts from individuals, which works the same as muting them. On iOS, open a chat conversation, tap on the contact profile, and toggle the Hide Alerts setting on. On Android, go to a chat conversation with the contact, tap the three dots in the upper right corner, tap Details, then Notifications, and select Silent.

Im not the person to describe how to totally get rid of the history of a number or contact you block. hopefully someone else can fill in the blanks or correct me where i stray. I tried this last night. I was still able to text someone I blocked. To my surprise.

  • Yes, you have only blocked seeing that they called or texted you.
  • Blocking has nothing to do with outgoing calls or texts.
  • The original answer to this question was incorrect.
  • Well I wish this wasn’t the correct answer! I’m screwed.

Why? You’re in complete control over whether or not you text someone. I wish once you’ve blocked someone that they weren’t able to leave a voicemail as well. really what is the point. !! [email protected] wrote: I wish once you’ve blocked someone that they weren’t able to leave a voicemail as well.

Really what is the point. !! The point is that people are not given any indication that they are blocked. If they couldn’t leave a voice mail, they might suspect they were blocked. There are situations in which this could be dangerous. The messages are, as I recall, put directly into your deleted folder.

You don’t have to listen to them. Sorry to bother you How did you know a person you had blocked received your text? Bc everything I’ve read says any text sent will appear as sent in blue and vice-versa from the recipient? And both parties will not know of any text exchange.

  • Thank you RobertKaplan wrote: How did you know a person you had blocked received your text? Blocking someone has no effect on your ability to send messages.
  • If it’s an iMessage, you’ll see the “Delivered” indicator below the message.
  • If it’s an SMS message, you won’t have any indication that it has been delivered.

Thank you – the forum and quroa go back and forth without a clear answer. But distinguishing the blue from the green is quite logical – it’s just that nobody made that crystal clear. Thanks for your help. My phone rings twice every time a blocked caller attempts to reach me.

  1. Unfortunately I get a lot of these and it is very disruptive.
  2. I really don’t want or care to know calls are being blocked.
  3. I would compromise with a text or email telling me what number is being blocked but the ringing has to go.
  4. How? What really ***** is that the voicemail is left in a different place for blocked numbers which I didn’t know about so my voicemail was full forever and I had no idea!! I still forget about it.

I blocked them!! I don’t want to have to track down their messages to delete them! I DON’T WANT THEM!! DUH!! Lol JeNnY1974L wrote: I don’t want to have to track down their messages to delete them! I DON’T WANT THEM!! DUH!! Lol Is it really that hard to find the Blocked Messages folder? It’s one of only two folders.
