Is Mario 50 years old?
The truth about Mario’s age – Fortunately, Mario’s portrayal in The Super Mario Bros. Movie freaked out at least one other writer: Polygon’ s Nicole Carpenter. (Carpenter had previously placed Mario in the 45–60 range.) She did some digging and found an interview, which appeared in English via The Independent, in which Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario’s creator, said Mario is “24 or 25.” Even the reporter at The Independent was thrown off by this.
- Carpenter points out that in Super Smash Bros.
- Melee, which came out in 2001, a trophy puts Mario’s age at 26.
- So from either source, we’re faced with a Mario in his mid-20s.
- What’s more, in an interview with a Japanese gaming outlet, Miyamoto revealed that he and artist Yoichi Katabe designed Mario’s father and mother over 20 years ago.
So none of this—not Mario’s age, nor the fact that his parents are alive and kicking and a part of his 20-something-year-old-life—is new information, per se. Miyamoto’s had it in his head this whole time. It’s just new to us, So please excuse me while I readjust everything I thought I knew about gaming canon.

How old is Bowser?
If you’re a Nintendo fan, you no doubt know Bowser, the gargantuan, bold, deliciously evil King of the Koopas who’s been breathing fire through Mario games and other spinoffs since 1985. If you’re deep into Mario lore, you also no doubt know a lot about his history, but even if you’re not, you probably imagine the guy as some kind of ancient beast who’s been working on his conquest of the Mushroom Kingdom and any other realm he can grasp since time immemorial.
- Well, according to a new video from Nintendo of America.not so much.
- RELATED: The Super Mario Bros.
- Movie Levels Up on Special Features in Power-Up Special Edition Earlier this month, Nintendo uploaded a short, innocuous how-to video to its official YouTube account, showing users exactly how to create their own Nintendo accounts, plus set up one for a child in the house.
It’s very straightforward and completely wordless, simply showing you what each screen looks like and how to navigate the account setup, but as IGN notes, there’s one very amusing Easter egg embedded in all the steps. Creating an account includes entering your date of birth, and because Nintendo chose to use “Bowser” as the name of their user for this demonstration, that means they basically gave King Koopa an official, maybe even canonical birthday: February 5, 1989.
- Yes, that means according to this video, Bowser is just 34 years old, which an especially odd thing to hear for those of us who were alive before 1989 and can remember playing Super Mario Bros,
- With a fully grown Bowser as far back as its 1985 release.
- To make things even more confusing, the child account addition is his son, Bowser Jr., who’s given a birthdate of March 3, 2011, almost a full decade after his 2002 debut.
So, Bowser is 34, and he has a 12-year-old son. Basically, he’s your neighbor, that guy who’s always trying to take control of the whole neighborhood by running the block party and bugging you about taking your trash bins in on time every week. We’ll see if Nintendo starts to work more of Bowser’s 34-ness into future games or films, or if we’re just all going to pretend like we didn’t see that.
Is Mario older than Sonic?
Mario came first before Sonic. Mario first came into this world known as Jumpman from Donkey Kong since 1981. Sonic first came into this world to become Mario’s game business rival since his first game in 1991.
Is Mario 40 years old?
Mario Is Around 25 Years Old In The Super Mario Bros Movie – Mario is one of the only main characters that has had his exact age confirmed in the past. According to franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario is 24–25 years old. This is surprising news to most Mario fans, as the character’s prominent facial hair and portly stature make Mario seem much older than he actually is.
Is Mario 45 years old?
I’d always assumed Nintendo’s most popular mascot, Mario, was aged somewhere from 45 to 60. Sure, he sometimes looks younger, relatively speaking, but we love a man with a good skincare routine. If I close my eyes and picture Mario, the image I see is no cartoon red apple : It’s Mario as played by Italian American wrestler Lou Albano in The Super Mario Bros.
Super Show — red overalls, huge mustache, and a tool belt slung across his waist. In 1993, Super Mario Bros. gave us another live-action way to judge Mario’s age, with Bob Hoskins, just pushing 50 at the time, donning the red jumpsuit. I’ve never questioned my belief that Mario was a middle-aged man. So when I watched Illumination’s new film, The Super Mario Bros.
Movie, I was shook. There’s evidence here that Mario is not actually a middle-aged man. Beyond that, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto once just came out and said it: Mario is roughly 24 to 25 years old in his original ’80s game appearances. Image: DiC Entertainment “I think it was fortuitous that we didn’t put any restrictions on Mario as a character,” Miyamoto said in an interview in 2005, as translated by The Independent, “Normally when you create a character and present him to the world, all the details get filed in : what’s his favorite colour? what kind of food does he like to eat? Aside from the fact that he’s about 24-25 years old, we didn’t define anything else.” Mario has been shown at different ages in different games, including as a baby in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island and a toddler in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time,
Nintendo also put Mario’s age on his Super Smash Bros. Melee trophy, specifically in the Japanese version, which states he’s 26 years old. That’s the most official confirmation of his age range that we’ve got. Either way, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is essentially Mario’s origin story — the start of his plumbing business and his first foray into the Mushroom Kingdom.
It makes sense to assume he’s younger than the storied plumber we’ve seen in certain shows and movies. Image: Hollywood Pictures One scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like further evidence that Mario is relatively young, maybe even barely out of his teen years. Shortly after Mario and Luigi come home from their first day of work as new business owners, their parents chastise them for leaving stable jobs to launch this new gig.
Daddy Mario ( voiced by original Mario Charles Martinet ) isn’t happy with Mario for cajoling Luigi into the business plan. Everyone’s mad! One family member even hates the brothers’ funny rapping commercial for their new venture. And Mario’s had enough. Both Mario and Luigi live at home with their parents, which doesn’t necessarily hint at their age until Mario ends up stomping away from the dinner table — and his mushroom pasta — to angrily play video games in his room.
It’s the sort of reaction you’d expect from a teenager, not a 50-year-old man. Everything changed for me after that scene. I spent the entire movie looking for further clues as to his age, to no avail, except to note that Mario can run, jump, and smash question-mark blocks without any sign of aches or fatigue.
Who is Luigi’s girlfriend?
In other media – Daisy is one of the main characters of 1993 ‘s Super Mario Bros. film, loosely based on the games, portrayed by Samantha Mathis, She is a student of archaeology at New York University whom Luigi falls in love with. While digging for dinosaur bones under the Brooklyn Bridge, Daisy is kidnapped by two henchmen of President Koopa, the dictator of Dinohattan, of which Daisy is the rightful princess.
- Daisy has also appeared several times throughout Kodansha ‘s Super Mario manga series, and in some episodes of the Nintendo Comics System,
- Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Hollywood ‘s immersive Super Nintendo World areas include Daisy, with her appearing in the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge attraction and the Super Nintendo World sections of Universal Studios’ smartphone applications.
The interactive “Power-Up Bands” feature a design based on her dress.
Is Wario Mario’s dad?
The original game is called Super Mario Bros., but are Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi actually one big family, or does it only seem that way? Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi – Nintendo’s premier platforming franchise characters who all share a similar fashion sense and naming convention. While Luigi joined Mario on his first exploits before striking out on his own ghost-hunting ventures, Wario was one of Mario’s first rivals right alongside Bowser, and Waluigi showed up when Wario needed a tennis partner.
For someone who first picked up on the Super Mario series on the Nintendo Switch, the familial relations between these similar-looking characters may be unclear, but the answers are quite straightforward. As far as Nintendo’s original pair of protagonists go, the answer to their relationship is in the name of their games.
Luigi was first introduced as Mario’s green-suited brother in Mario Bros. That arcade game eventually became Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and Luigi has been an important part of Mario’s adventures ever since. Although Luigi is taller, he takes the status of the younger brother and lives routinely in Mario’s shadow if the mockery he receives from Toads in Super Mario 64 DS is anything to go by. Wario originated in Mario’s second Game Boy game outing as the villain. According to Super Mario Land 2 ‘s backstory, Wario is Mario’s childhood acquaintance, and the two have never been portrayed as blood relations despite their similar appearance. Wario’s similarity to Mario instead stems from the developers of Super Mario Land 2 ‘s discomfort with making Mario games (according to a now-archived article on kombo ) since a different division of Nintendo was behind the NES originals.
How old is toad?
Toad 101 – The mushroom with the handsome headpiece is celebrating its 38th birthday in 2023, as the the character made its debut in 1985 in the video game Super Mario Bros. It’s the creation of game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who is the brains behind the entire Super Mario world of characters and locations.
- Toad has appeared in just about every iteration of the Mario games, either as a playable or non-playable character.
- In the box office hit The Super Mario Bros.
- Movie, Toad is a major character working alongside Peach to keep Bowser from invading their peaceful Kingdom.
- And at the Super Nintendo World lands in Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Hollywood, Toad is one of just six featured Power-Up Band characters that can be your avatar as you interact within the land and gather coins.
(They also run the Toadstool Cafe which is very mushroom themed from top to bottom.) RELATED: 7 things we learned inside Universal Studios Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World To be clear, Toad is both the name of the specific character who is the dedicated attendant to Princess Peach and also refers to the general populace of Toads who reside in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Why is Bowser 34?
Video games aren’t real life, sure. I get that. But it’s still odd to realize that certain game characters who have been around for what seems like forever, aren’t actually that old. For example, according to a new video from Nintendo, Mario’s archnemesis— Bowser —is only in his thirties.
Some of you are probably not taking that news well. What You Should Know About Mario Strikers’ Big Free Update The Super Mario Bros, franchise started back in 1985 with the release of the original Super Mario Bros, for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game—which was a successor to the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros,—was a massive hit and spawned a series that is still around today.
In fact, just a few months ago an animated film based on the series hit theaters and broke box office records in the process. You’ve probably heard about it. And while Mario and Luigi are the main stars of the series, the main villain throughout most of the games is King Koopa himself: Bowser.
- Oddly, Bowser—this iconic, larger-than-life villain—isn’t some 200-year-old ancient lizard monster-god or whatever.
- Instead, he’s just 34 years old.
- As first spotted by fan blog Super Mario Broth, a newly released, unlisted video from Nintendo of America briefly shows Bowser’s year of birth.
- The video is a walkthrough of how to create a Nintendo account and it uses Bowser as an example, showing him entering information about himself including his date of birth: February 5, 1989.
So Bowser is 34. Also in the same video, we see Bowser Jr.’s birthday is March 3, 2010, making him 13. As pointed out by Super Mario Broth, this is the first time either character—Bowser or Bowser Jr.—has had their birthdays revealed. Now you all know when to buy Bowser Jr.
a birthday gift of, I don’t know, some Roblox points or whatever the kids are into these days. Of course, there is the caveat that this is not a canon Super Mario Bros, video game, just an instructional video from Nintendo. So perhaps the age was picked randomly or coincides with some other event in the company’s history.
That would explain how Bowser, according to the date in this video, was born four years after he appeared in the first Super Mario Bros, game on NES. Or maybe that was a different Bowser who died and was replaced by other Bowsers. This is getting dark, so let’s stop here before many of you realize you are somehow older than Bowser.
Why is Bowser 34 years old?
That’s pretty young for someone who’s been chasing after Mario and friends since 1985. – Nintendo just revealed that Bowser, Mario’s longtime arch-enemy and the King of the Koopas in the Mushroom Kingdom, is canonically 34 years old. The ages of all the characters in the Super Mario Bros.
- Franchise have remained a mystery since 1985.
- However, Nintendo of America revealed Bowser’s age in the most hilarious way possible: through a YouTube video post last Friday (though still unlisted) showing Nintendo Switch owners how to create a Nintendo Account,
- The first thing you do when creating your Nintendo Account is put in your birthdate to ensure you’re 18 or older at the time of account creation.
The company used Bowser as an example for the demonstration to make it seem as though he’s making a Nintendo Account for himself, setting his birthdate to Feb.5, 1989, which puts his age at precisely 34 years old. That’s quite young for a turtle dragon that’s been going after Mario and his friends along with Princess Peach for nearly 40 years.
Nintendo also revealed the canonical age of Bowser’s only son, Bowser Jr. When creating a Nintendo Account for a child, Bowser Jr.’s birthdate is set to March 3, 2010, which makes him 13 years old. Seeing the heir to the Koopa throne as a teenager instead of the little kid he’s always been is hilarious considering we haven’t seen him hit puberty yet – growth spurt, deepening voice, acne and all.
If you’re wondering how old some of the other characters are, Shigeru Miyamoto said in a 2005 interview that Mario is somewhere between 24 and 25, while Luigi is the same age. That means they’re twins! Cristina Alexander is a freelance writer for IGN.
Is Bowser a single dad?
Bowser May Be the Bad Guy, But He’s A Good Dad – Bowser has played a role in some of the best Super Mario games ever created and he’s definitely had a journey through each of them. One might argue that him lying to Junior about Princess Peach being his mother and going on a rampage in the aptly named Bowser’s Fury DLC for Super Mario 3D World might immediately point him to the ‘bad dad’ end of the dad spectrum, but his overall fatherly acts would beg to differ.
First off, while Nintendo has confirmed Bowser Jr as the only legitimate heir to the Koopa Kingdom, he also has a few adopted siblings – the Koopalings. The Koopa King’s heart is so generous that he adopts the Koopalings, who even call him ‘father.’ Bowser, mighty King of the Koopas, could quite as easily just throw these kids off to the side, but he takes the Koopalings under his wing and treats them as his own.
Junior may not have a motherly figure, but at least he’s not alone in his upbringing. Secondly, Bowser provides a lot to his children – not only Bowser Jr, but even the Koopalings themselves. Super Mario Bros.3 gave each Koopaling their own castle. Not only that, but each castle was uniquely customized with their own decor and traps, too.
Junior gets his own castle in New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, and he’s had countless methods to conduct his mischief over the years, including flying airships. All that can’t be cheap, but Bowser seems more than willing to give his kids what they need to succeed, regardless of what it may cost. That definitely should rank him as a great video game dad,
At the end of Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser has a deep conversation with his son and admits to Junior that Princess Toadstool isn’t really his mother – although Junior admits that he knew for some time. Firstly, it’s hard enough for any parent to admit their wrongdoings to his child during a heart-to-heart.
Secondly, Bowser is just a single dad who wants a positive, feminine figure in his son’s life. Peach might not be a great motherly figure but Bowser kidnapping her is really for the sake of the Prince, not himself. Best of all, Bowser doesn’t coddle his kid. While he does place some restrictions and pays attention to the kinds of media Junior consumes, he allows Prince Koopa the room he needs to grow into his own person.
During Paper Mario: The Origami King, Bowser enlightens fans on his parenting philosophy as he traverses the Paper Kingdom with Mario and Olivia. “You have to let kids take chances,” he says to the duo after Olivia scolds him for allowing Junior to remain in plight, which is very well the truth.
Is Mario older than 18?
Image: Nintendo / Illumination Back when Mario was nothing more than an 8-bit sprite on our NES consoles, we were not all that concerned about age. After all, he’s the jumpy mushroom guy, who cares how many birthdays he’s seen? This is the kind of mentality that’s been carried through into most of the subsequent games.
- Even as the character’s design became increasingly detailed, his age wasn’t at the forefront of our minds because we had other, gameplay-based things to think about.
- But now that The Super Mario Bros.
- Movie is here, all of a sudden, we care,
- No longer is Mario just a character that we control, but we’ve seen another side to him thanks to Illumination and Nintendo’s film.
We’ve seen that has a life of his own outside of the games. With this comes questions that we might not have asked after playing, say, Super Mario Odyssey : what are his hobbies? Does he have any dreams? And, most importantly, just how old is this guy? The issue is that we’re still no closer to knowing the answer to this final question, and the movie may have even muddied our thoughts.
- The Mario Movie presents us with a couple of different options, all separated by a good decade or so, so while we left the cinema with a smile on our faces, we were also scratching our heads.
- Before we get into the specifics of the film itself (don’t worry, we’ll let you know when we are about to enter spoiler territory), let’s break down what we know about Mario’s age up until this point.
Back in 2016, The Independent unearthed an interview from 2005 with Shigeru Miyamoto. In this discussion, Mario’s creator made a pretty definitive statement on the issue of how old Mario is — “he’s about 24-25 years old”, Miyamoto responded. That’s despite many fans assuming the plumber is middle-aged, but Miyamoto gave the character this age at the time because it would allow him to be used in other games.
- Of course, there has been room to play about with this number throughout the Mario franchise.
- Nobody is pretending that the nappy-wearing variant seen in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island is legally able to drive a car, and the plumber’s trophy in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros.
- Melee places him at a slightly older 26 (via The Mushroom Kingdom ); but, for the most part, that mid-20s bracket is the region that we have been playing in.
But this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Mario seen in the Illumination film is the same age as the one that we have formally come across in the games. In fact, some sequences in the film even go as far as to challenge that grown-up number that we have been dealing with this whole time. You’d need to be in your 20s to jump out of a sewer, right? — Image: Nintendo Throughout most of the film’s opening sequence in Brooklyn, Mario is perfectly believable as a man in his 20s: he has a steady job, some disposable income, a huge moustache — he’s an adult.
- But then we get to a scene that shows Mario and Luigi at home, sitting at the dining table with their family and out of nowhere, the plumbers appear to be pitched much younger.
- Mario has his dinner served to him, he talks about his dislike of mushrooms, his parents chastise him for his silly dreams and, climactically, he storms away from the table to go and sulk in his room.
None of these aspects are necessarily tied to a certain age, but the whole scene presents Mario as way more of a child than we were expecting. In the ensuing scenes of Mario without his cap on, we couldn’t help but notice that the Nintendo mascot looked unusually smooth.
We know that this Mario can drive a van so he’s at least 16 (assuming that the fictional Brooklyn has the same legal driving age as the real one), but his naivety, childhood bedroom — crammed full of posters, figures, and references — and bright features got us thinking that this wasn’t a man in his 20s, but someone who is much younger; albeit one with a full-time job and impressive facial hair.
On top of all this (we really don’t want to throw another spanner in the works, but needs must), you have the live-action presentations of Mario in both the 1989 The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie. Nothing against professional wrestler Lou Albano or Oscar-nominated actor Bob “I used to play King Lear” Hoskins, but these takes on the character are hardly ones of a man in his 20s — Albano was well into his 50s at the time, and Hoskins was pushing 50 at the time of the movie’s release.
We didn’t quite get a 50-something vibe from the Illumination film, but all we’re saying is that anything is possible. So where does this leave us? In one scenario, you’ve got the mid-20s game presentation that Miyamoto emphasised back in the day, then in another, you have the film that sometimes leans toward a younger vibe.
On a final, third hand that we have magically pulled out of nowhere, you have the live-action takes which depict the plumber as a man who is way older still. We’d advise against reading into The Super Mario Bros. Movie too far (really, it’s not that deep), but this is a question that we need answering.
What is the oldest Mario?
There aren’t many video game characters that are in the consciousness of the general public, however Mario certainly has made great strides in this area. It’s rare to meet someone who has not heard of the Italian plumber named Mario, but those who don’t play video games often may be unaware of his humble beginnings.
- Mario was not the main character in his first video game appearance.
- You may be surprised to know that he wasn’t a plumber, and his name wasn’t Mario either.
- He made his first appearance in the 1981 pioneering Nintendo arcade game Donkey Kong.
- Mario’s character was called ‘Jumpman’ and he was a carpenter rather than a plumber.
‘Jumpman’ had to jump over barrels that were being thrown by Donkey Kong in order to save a damsel in distress (which would later be called Princess). Since those small beginnings, Mario has come a long way. Over the last 30 years Mario has appeared in more than 200 video games and has been referenced in hundreds more Nintendo and non-Nintendo titles.

Who is Bowser’s wife?
He doesn’t have one per se Nintendo of Europe comically, but non-canonically gave him a wife named Clawdia (Which Miyamoto has stated Bowser is not married nor divorced), lots of geeky internet sites such as Newgrounds and Dorkly takes this and run with the joke as if it was canonical.
Is Princess Peach 16?
Some Days You Wake Up and Are Gripped by the Need To Know Just How Old Princess Peach Is We all have those days, right? Sometimes you just tumble our of bed and you stumble to the kitchen and then stop in your tracks because you’ve just asked yourself—I wonder how old, Mushroom Kingdom royalty, damsel in distress extraordinaire and overall iconic character in one of the most famous videogame franchises in the world is. Finally center stage like she deserves. (Nintendo) But when it comes to her intradiegetic, in-age game, the question gets a little more complicated. If she’s a Princess, does that mean she’s relatively young and there’s a King (or a Queen) ruling the Mushroom Kingdom? Or is it more like a principate despite being called “Kingdom”? Am I looking too much into fictional geopolitics? Maybe.
- What’s certain is that despite appearing in a lot of Super Mario titles, not much is known about her—she has evolved somehow from simply being Bowser’s hostage, but her potential within the games is still largely unexplored.
- The Internet at large reports that Princess Peach was in fact a teenager during her first appearance in Super Mario Bros., where she was 15 years old.
In more recent games, though, she’s a bit older and somewhere in her twenties, around the ages of 20 and 25. Something that would definitely make sense with my ramblings about there being an actual King or Queen of the Mushroom Kingdom and Peach being more like a member of the royal family—maybe the Crown Princess. Princess BFFs. (Nintendo) What’s certain is that no matter her position in the Mushroom line of succession, Princess Peach is loaded—she was actually featured in Forbes Magazine’s 2007 list of Wealthiest Fictional Characters. Her fortune apparently amounts to $1.3 billion between real estate properties like Mushroom Castle, high-fashion outfits like the more than 500 different versions of her signature pink dress, and of course, the coins that Mario gathers during his adventures around various worlds.
How old is Waluigi?
How old is Rosalina?
Rosalina’s storybook in Super Mario Galaxy is likely the story of how her Lumas, the observatory, and her powers were created. Rosalina wore a pannier dress in her original design, but it was changed to be bell sleeve. In Mario Kart Wii, she is the only female by all unlockable heavyweights. This class designation may be due to her being taller than Peach and Daisy; the same happens to Waluigi. In Mario Golf: World Tour, Rosalina is a playable character, but still wears her normal dress. This aspect carries over into the golf game of Mario Sports Superstars, Because of this, Rosalina is the second female to participate in a sports-centered game wearing high heels, after White Mage. (Peach and Daisy do not have this designation because the Mario Kart games and Mario Party series are not official sports games, though Mario Kart may be close to it). In her Fire Flower form, Rosalina puts her hair in a ponytail like Peach in sports games, the only time a female other than Peach does so. Notably, her bang still covers her right eye just as it does when she is in her normal state. During an interview with Yoshiaki Koizumi (director of Super Mario Galaxy and creator of Rosalina) on the development of Super Mario Galaxy, he explained that Rosalina was originally meant to be related with Peach, but it’s not clear if that’s still the case. In her storybook, there is a depiction of her mother, who resembles Peach in a blue dress. During the final chapter in the French version of Super Mario Galaxy a description of her father is given describing him as a tall mustached father. Rosalina is shown to be one of the tallest characters in the Mario franchise. Her height is also shown to be equaled to Waluigi’s, making the two of them the tallest human characters in the series. However, Waluigi often squats and almost never stands straight up as a way to emulate the short statutes of the Mario Bros. and Wario, which reduces his height. Plus Rosalina is mostly seen levitating in her spin-off appearances. Rosalina broke the fourth wall twice after the player completes Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2, Rosalina is one of the oldest characters in the Mario franchise and possibly the oldest human character as well, being at least 100 years old and possibly millions, as she states she visits Earth once every 100 years. In Super Mario Odyssey, other than being an 8-bit sprite, she was going to be a guitarist in New Donk City, but this was scrapped. It is heavily implied that Rosalina was a princess by birth, evidence of this is Rosalina wearing a crown when she meets Luma when she’s a child and while in space, she uses a telescope to take a look at her home, which appears to be a large castle. This would mean that Rosalina’s parents are the King and Queen of an unknown kingdom and her brother is a prince.
