Do lawyers get paid more in UK or US?

Salary wars – are lawyers being paid too much?, March 2020 With firms paying their young talent more than ever, the answer from junior associates is probably a resounding ‘no’. Let’s dive into some numbers. There are many ways to measure the prosperity of the legal sector: the value of all deals being done.

  1. Trainee class sizes across the market.
  2. We don’t often think to measure how happy lawyers are with their jobs, but that’s another story for another article.
  3. Another indicator of how the legal sector is doing is NQ salaries.
  4. A decade ago, the fallout from the Great Recession prompted many firms to cut back on their trainee classes and NQ salaries were paralysed as one way of cutting costs.

Despite uncertainty surrounding covid-19 and other market-bothering fears, the last six years have seen firms splash the cash at unprecedented levels. If associate pay is anything to go by, the legal industry is doing rather well. Assessing associate salaries is trickier than you might think.

NQ Salaries 2015 NQ Salaries 2021
1. Sullivan & Cromwell: £105,000 1.Vinson & Elkins: £153,300
2. Latham & Watkins: £100,629 2. Kirkland & Ellis; Latham & Watkins: $205,000
3. Akin Gump: £100,000 3. Skadden: £150,000
4. Kirkland & Ellis: £97,560 4. Akin Gump; Mofo: $202,500
5. Cleary Gottlieb £96,000 5. Sidley Austin: £148,500

In just six years NQ salaries have grown massively at the top paying firms, all of which are American giants. As can be seen above, many US firms pay market rate in their London offices: currency conversion may cause some ups and downs, but big big money is guaranteed.

Since 2015, there’s been around a 50% increase among the highest-paying outfits in London. Part of this explosion has come from the shift at some firms to paying associates the same salary in the UK as in the US, converted from dollars – this would of course be vulnerable to changes in currency value.

Chambers Student editor Antony Cooke put together Theoretically, an associate could now complete their training contract aged 23 and begin by earning over £150k in their first year of ‘real’ work. Now that’s some serious cheddar. US invaders are seriously outgunning the UK elite – including the magic circle – in the salary wars. Collectively, US firms pay an average £127,000 qualification salary. These huge sums of money have driven up the average NQ salary in London to over £80,000, which represents a staggering 100% increase on the average first year trainee salary of £40,000.

  1. Outside of the M25, salaries are unsurprisingly more modest – the happy side of the coin is a significantly lower cost of living, plus the prospect of home ownership without needing to inherit millions from a distant relative you’ve never heard of.
  2. There are plenty of metrics we could use to prove this point – we’ll just note that shortly after the University of Sheffield law fair we were able to buy a pint for £3 and leave Londoners to cry into their own beers.

Our research shows that regional trainees can expect an average first year salary of £28,803, 38% lower than in London. The gap is much bigger at NQ level: £47,554 average outside the capital is a whopping 81% lower than inside it. While it’s fair to say that the average cost of living is probably not 81% higher in London, the price of properties certainly is. According to Zoopla, the average property price in London in October 2021 was (brace yourself) £661,403; in Manchester it was £243,330.

  1. Take all this into consideration when you decide whether the Big Smoke – and the big money that comes with it – is right for you.
  2. In the long run, the growing inequality in NQ salary rates – both between firms in London, and outside it – will likely become unsustainable.
  3. Money isn’t everything, and a thorough analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each firm is essential.

Londoners need to earn more than £300,000 a year to be classed as rich Published: 00:02 BST, 6 August 2019 | Updated: 06:36 BST, 6 August 2019

  • It takes a salary of more than £300,000 a year to be counted rich in, an analysis of the country’s fattest pay packets found yesterday.
  • And to be seen as one of the top earners in his peer group, a middle-aged man in the capital has to make £700,000 a year, it said.
  • The scale of the salaries, bonuses and perks of the best-paid is ‘staggering’, the respected Institute for Fiscal Studies said, adding that its research showed ‘the extraordinary scale of the gulf between the merely well off and the very richest’.

A major survey by the Institute of Fiscal Studies revealed more than half the top earners in the UK live in London or the south east

  1. The £300,000 figure is the salary needed to be among the top one per cent of income tax payers in London, the IFS said.
  2. It is almost twice as high as the £162,000 needed to join the one per cent of highest income tax payers across the rest of the country.
  3. The figures were revealed in a major study of the wages of Britain’s workforce based on parliamentary constituencies.
  4. The high pay gap is such that a member of the biggest earning group – a man aged between 45 and 54 – would be in the top one per cent in the country on £162,000, but that pay packet would put him outside the top five per cent in London.
  5. To be in the top one per cent in the capital, he would need to make more than £700,000 a year.
  6. Researchers at IFS based their study on the self-assessment tax forms demanded by Revenue and Customs from anyone who earns more than £100,000 a year.
  7. Their report said that, nationally, just over 300,000 people make enough to be in the top one per cent, and that they pay more than a quarter of all income tax.

  • One in three of the top earners are business owners or partners in large concerns, the report said, and others are City workers such as hedge fund managers.
  • The top group also includes senior accountants and lawyers – one large accountancy business paid its partners on average more than £600,000 last year, and one London law firm pays £100,000 a year even to newly-qualified solicitors.
  • Medical professionals are also among the top one per cent, and the best-paid include GPs, some of whom are said to earn up to £700,000 a year.
  • The pay scales dwarf the salary paid to the Prime Minister, who can claim £158,754 a year.

Aberdeen is the only northern constituency to contain more than two per cent of earners who are in the one per cent club Report author Robert Joyce said: ‘The highest-income people are very over-represented in the country’s south east corner, most of them are men, and many are in their 40s and 50s.’ Women were less likely to be high earners, and someone on £100,000 a year can count herself in the top one per cent of high-paid women nationally.

  1. The study of the 650 parliamentary constituencies revealed only 30 where more than two per cent of adults are in the top one per cent of taxpayers.
  2. The top five constituencies with the highest earners were all in London – Westminster, Kensington, Chelsea and Fulham, Richmond Park and Esher and Walton.
  3. The bottom five were Liverpool Walton, Rhondda, Stoke-on-Trent Central, Birmingham Hodge Hill and Kingston upon Hull East.
