For some fans, the resale price of Taylor Swift tickets has become casually cruel. The average secondary market price of a ticket to the North American leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour was $3,801 as of July 10, Pitchfork reported, using data from ticket analytics firm TicketIQ.

That’s a 2,321% increase from her 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour, for which the average resale price in North America was $157. It’s also a steep increase from the face value of the tour’s tickets, which averaged $253.56, Pollstar, a company that provides data on the global concert industry, reported in June.

Regular tickets for the US leg of Swift’s tour, which kicked off in March, were priced between $49 and $449, with VIP packages ranging from $199 to $899. It’s not just Swift fans who are paying more for tickets: Resale prices are up across the board, with Beyoncé and Harry Styles tickets costing an average of $1,096 and $1,061, respectively, for the North American runs of their most recent tours.

Those figures are up from $245 and $553 during both artists’ previous tours, which took place in 2016 and 2017, Pitchfork reported. This increase can be blamed on a number of things: Pent up demand from fans who couldn’t see their favorite artists during the pandemic, bots that can by face-value tickets faster than humans can, and a host of “junk fees” consumers face at the end of their ticketing transactions, hiking up prices in general.

One 31-year-old Swiftie paid $5,500 for Eras tickets on the secondary market. She told Insider that while waiting for more than three hours in the digital queue in November 2022, she checked StubHub to see if any tickets were being resold. At the time, she said prices on the secondary market ranged from $5,000 to $30,000.

A fan in California purchased a ticket for $1,400 on the secondary market, only for the ticket to not exist. Last year, Ticketmaster drew the ire of Swifties, after a disastrous ticket launch that prompted the company to address the backlash in a blog post, which attributed the chaotic ticket-buying process to a “staggering number of bot attacks” and unprecedented demand.

Swifties filed a lawsuit against Ticketmaster in December 2022, citing “fraud, price-fixing, and antitrust violations.” US lawmakers are also attempting to intervene. In January, the Senate Judiciary Committee hed a hearing that aimed to investigate the 2010 merger between Ticketmaster and Live Nation, and whether or not the companies have engaged in anti-competitive behavior.

  1. In mid-June, after a meeting at the White House, Live Nation announced it would display the total costs of its tickets — including fees — to users upfront, rather then at the end of a transaction.
  2. Ticketmaster and StubHub did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
  3. Even in the event of a better ticketing experience, resale markets will continue to be something fans will have to contend with.

It’s a classic problem of supply and demand. “Taylor would need to perform over 900 stadium shows” or a “stadium show every single night for the next 2.5 years” to meet demand for the Eras Tour, Ticketmaster noted. How much do Taylor Swift tickets cost Toronto?

Open this photo in gallery: Taylor Swift performs during the Eras Tour, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, on Aug.7. Chris Pizzello/The Associated Press We all have our extravagances. Mine, justified. Yours? Not so much. You should save and invest more, live within your means better and generally sacrifice today for a better tomorrow.

Don’t even mention those Taylor Swift concerts. People spending thousands of dollars on tickets and travel for a few hours of music? Do they not know they can listen to music on Spotify for free, or find it online? Think how much long-term care they could buy in old age with their concert money. This rant is brought to you by the judgmental, cranky side of people in personal finance, which operates with the idea of making you feel guilty for spending on yourself.

Some earlier contributions from this school of thought concerned the wastefulness of buying lattes and avocado toast, the foolishness of buying new cars versus used and the excess of the granite countertop, when laminate will do. We need a new way to talk about extravagances, and Taylor Swift’s Eras tour is the perfect venue.

  • It’s accepted as fact that everyone deserves a splurge or two, that we may not agree on what’s a justified indulgence, and that it’s okay for a splurge to stretch your finances just a bit.
  • We want rules for real people and the real world, not a personal finance utopia.
  • Concerts are back with a vengeance.

How much are people paying and how long will the spending last? Let’s start with a definition of extravagance. Tickets for Taylor Swift’s six-night swing through Toronto ranged from roughly $150 to $600. That’s the cost of a premium concert in 2023, like it or not.

If you were unable to score some tickets when they were offered online, you can buy them on the resale market. On StubHub, tickets ranged from roughly $2,500 to almost $6,000 each. We are now well into extravagance territory, especially if you’re travelling from out of town. A couple of nights at a hotel, a few restaurant meals and a bar visit could easily add another $1,000 or more to your cost.

A sign you’re overspending on a Taylor Swift concert is that you plan to put the cost on your credit card because you don’t have the cash. The 20-per-cent interest rate on most credit cards is tolerable – just barely – for a month or two. But if your card already has a balance owing, adding a few thousand dollars is very likely to cost you hundreds of dollars in interest.

  • That’s a pure waste.
  • Dipping into your savings for tickets is fine, as long as you have something substantial left for emergencies like a loss of income.
  • Sooner or later, a recession is coming.
  • Now’s not the time to blow your financial cushion on a weekend in Toronto.
  • Consumer spending is a double-edged sword as Bank of Canada tries to control inflation The best way to make splurges doable is to have a basic financial plan in place.

That means you’re putting money away regularly to save and/or invest, that your debts are being paid off in an orderly way and that your spending does not exceed your income, except in rare moments. Consider a ” splurge budget ” for spending beyond your weekly and monthly costs for restaurants, bars, clubs, movies, etc.

Maybe this overlaps with your vacation budget. The point is to have a pool of money you can use to blow on something fun and frivolous every now and then. Some degree of restraint is important here. Saying yes to a Taylor Swift concert probably means taking a pass on the next big concert, or a similar event with a four-figure cost.

You can’t do everything, although you’ll be tempted to. The Taylor Swift concert tour is a perfect example of how we’re getting comfortable with the idea of spending large amounts of money on experiences. Partly, this is an aspect of the ” revenge spending ” that followed the pandemic lockdowns.

  1. Denied the chance to be out in the world, people have been spending heavily on travel, restaurants and other services.
  2. Fear of missing out – FOMO – is another part of the story.
  3. In the social media age, it can be unbearable to see your friends having epic experiences while you’re at home with your emergency fund and your tax-free savings account for company.

And, let’s face it, we as a society are less and less emphasizing short-term sacrifice for long-term gain. This isn’t just a spending thing – it’s also evident in planning for climate change, our aging population and other areas. We all deserve to kick back once in a while, though.

She won’t be back until late 2024 for some recently added shows in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis.

It wasn’t just a concert; it was a tent show revival held in Los Angeles in the stunning SOFI Stadium. Given all the noise and posturing surrounding this tour in which government officials proposed legislation and investigations into why there weren’t enough tickets for everyone (demand exceeded supply), it was nice to see the U.S.

  • Tour conclude, and watch as the rest of the world acted more reasonably.
  • Most people understand that when demand exceeds supply for a big concert tour, it’s literally musical chairs.
  • Some people get to go, others do not.
  • No amount of peacocking or TikTok postings will change the simple math of there are only so many seats and they are already taken.

Sometimes there are dancers on stage to add color. Occasionally, the lead singer interacts with the crowd, but usually it is just two hours of a carefully paced set list and done. Taylor Swift did not put on a concert. She brought two opening bands who played the enormous stage in concert style: Gayle and Haim.

They played their hits while the audience found seats, drinks and settled in for the evening. That was the “concert” portion of the evening. INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA – AUGUST 03: EDITORIAL USE ONLY. The Beatles would have been jealous of the velocity of noise filling the massive space. This audience, already in full Taylor inspired dress, draped with friendship bracelets, and made up in ways to pay homage to their hero was more than ready. When the clock hit zero and the dancers made their way halfway down the stage to the giant center point of the stage extension the fans were shaking with anticipation.

As she appeared the room felt like a cork had just evacuated a champagne bottle. After months of waiting, and more than two hours on site gathering merchandise and watching the two solid opening acts – Gayle and Haim – it was time. Taylor was here and there began the nearly four hour journey through all the Eras of her career.

Once Taylor’s portion of the show started, you could immediately understand the level of planning which went into the fine details of the staging, lights and effects. This show underlined the difference between artistry and artifice. There was nothing false about what went on. Taylor for the most part was in the middle of the room, moving freely along the massive stage runner which split SOFI nearly in two.

She sang her songs and spoke to the audience. While she did, effects went off which enhanced and elevated the crowds’ engagement. Everyone who entered the stadium was given a wrist strap which contained a multicolored light which flashed in accordance with signals sent from cameras positioned throughout.

  • These lights were keyed to create colors which enhanced the mood of nearly every song, and from time-to-time patterns such as a big red heart would appear filling an entire section of the stadium.
  • Taylor Swift’s stage on August 9, 2023 at SOFI stadium in Los Angeles, CA Eric Fuller The staging elements were not fancy, except for the way in which LED screens made up the floor and background of the staging, making it possible for every space where performers moved to become interactive.

It was not the first time that lighting, hydrogen, fire and fireworks, movable stage elements, props and costumes have been used to enhance a show, but this was one of the best executed examples of how to do it perfectly. Watching the parade of costumed dancers moving downstage when Taylor sang from center stage while a scissor lift moved her seemingly 15 feet into the air, then back down again as beams of light danced around the stage perimeter made the event more visually engaging.

  • It made me think about what was happening here, where music was the lead, and the design elements were meant to add to the experience.
  • It struck me that the $2.4 billion Sphere which is getting ready to open in Las Vegas is likely doomed.
  • What engages a crowd is not perfect sound, SOFI certainly had echoes and noise leak.

It’s not becoming insignificant in the face of an all-encompassing screen. What has made this specific tour such a global success is that Taylor Swift figured out how to use social media to build community, then strengthened that community by continuing to put out new music, online posts, photos, and every other facet of keeping her fans unified.

Even during this specific performance, there were little cues to let everyone feel like an insider. You would watch Swift singing on the giant screen, then she’d mouth something unrelated to the song and it read like a personal message to each fan in attendance. The global effect of Taylor Swift’s tour has been staggering.

When she comes into a city, it is an economic force which lifts their economies. Hotels are full and fully priced, restaurants and bars do well, clothes are bought, and drinks are sold. It has often been said about how golf tournament attendance moved that Tiger Woods didn’t move the “needle” he was the needle.
